How does a person survive losing everything and starting a new life in a new land? The Shadow of Silver Birch tells this story of love and survival. The novel traces the lives of a Latvian father and his two daughters from the start of World War 11 to the early 1990´s. The fact that it takes place in Latvia, Spain, Canada, and the United States gives it a unique perspective on this period of time. This is a story that has yet to be told in fiction. In the midst of the chaos of war both the father, Juris, a widower and Laura, his daughter find love in unexpected places.

Both face incredible challenges. The question is can love survive the challenges of the upside down post war world? The other sister, Olga, leaves Latvia just before Riga falls, and after time in a displaced persons camp, makes her way to Canada with her husband and his family. Through the challenges of life in a new country she finds strength and satisfaction in new roles for herself and her family. The book includes dainas (ancient Latvian quatrains) translated into English with each chapter heading and some recipes of typical Latvian dishes that bring an immediate feel of the Latvian culture to the reader.
